Academics

Our program is known for its intensive academic schedule. The purpose is to develop the most well rounded informed resident as possible. We are also preparing the way to enhance research and lecturing/teaching skills.

The following is a brief overview of the regularly scheduled academics.

Journal Club

Journal club is one of our most important academic activities. We review an entire journal each week. This often entails 2-4 hours of preparation by residents and staff. The journal is reviewed by the resident in an organized manor then the group discusses the relevance, and quality of the article. There are always 2 attendings at these meetings, often more. Many debates and discussions ensue making this a very interactive experience.

Podiatric Lecture Series (PLS)

PLS is a weekly lecture series that involves student's, resident's and attending. Residents are assigned topics at the beginning of the academic year in order to have them focus on advance knowledge in certain areas that will aid them in their career. We also have attending lectures once per month. The students also utilize this time to provide their presentations.

X-Ray Conference

This conference allows the residents to present a variety of cases. We encourage community attending input and case presentation. Difficult and unusual cases can be debated and solutions identified in this setting.

Clinical Case Conference (CCC)

This is a monthly internet audio/visual duel conference with the Greater Texas Education Foundation (Harris County Residency Program). This conference is an excellent opportunity to present difficult and typical surgical cases. One excellent benefit is the ability to gain a new prospective from different program philosophies.

Limb Salvage

This is a weekly conference conducted at P/SL. It is organized and managed by a world class group of orthopedic surgeons. This conference involves orthopedics, plastics, radiology, pathology, vascular and rehabilitation professions to review difficult cases.

Attending Conference

One of the most recent additions to our academic series is the Attending Conference.  Once a month, a select group of surgical attendings in the residency program are asked to convene as a panel and discuss a specific foot and ankle topic.  Specific questions posed include: individual work-up of patients, diagnostic modalities utilized, conservative and surgical interventions, post-operative courses, and billing/practice management.  This has become another invaluable learning experience for both the resident and student offered at our program.
